Most people are aware of the upcoming Special Called Session of General Conference on February 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri, but many are not aware of the details of the process or the proposed agenda of the conference. UMC Communications has prepared a set of briefs of background information and links to relevant pages on the web. You do not have to subscribe to their monthly service; you simply can download any of the links that interest you.
Many congregations have had “listening” sessions for members to express their concerns as well as to learn how General Conference works. I have been surprised how many long-term Methodists do not know the basic organization of the church’s structure. We have a legislative, executive, and judicial separation of powers in our church’s constitution, much like the US Constitution.
This special called session may (or may not) affect our church structure. The proposed plans and resolutions are only recommendations, and only the General Conference can enact church law.
